Dear friend,
There is a living Buddha in our midst, and his name is Thich Nhat Hanh.
Nearly three decades ago, when I was in my late 20s, I had the good fortune to attend several retreats with Thich Nhat Hanh and later to spend time with him at his monastery, Plum Village, in the south of France. He was one of the first people I met who transmitted what it feels like to live in the present moment, and I was mesmerized by him and his teaching.
I was rapt by how he walked with an awareness of each step … how he took off his hat and carefully placed it next to the meditation cushion … how he sat in silence until speech was ready to emerge, as if of its own accord … how he invited the sound of the bell and reminded us that with the sound we were being invited to return to our true self. Each of his actions communicated total in-the-moment-ness.
Thich Nhat Hanh describes living in such a way as “the art of mindful living,” and the key is to experience what he calls “body and mind as one.”
You probably know in your own experience what it is like for your mind and body to feel like two. I sure do. To me, it feels like there is a voice in my head that is going round and round about something I am not even sure I care about while not feeling much connection to anything else. Body? What body? Just a floating head commenting on life.
Living with “body and mind as one” is what Thich Nhat Hanh models and what he teaches—a way to be so fully present that our mind and body are harmoniously in sync, graceful flowerings of the present moment.
Thich Nhat Hanh has devoted his life to teaching the practices and skills that enable each of us to live with such immediacy and joy, contributing exactly what is needed in the moment. Any chance to study with him is your chance to connect with a living Buddha. I am so grateful this series is available, both as a gift to you and to future generations.
With love on the journey,
Tami Simon

Body and Mind Are One
An Invitation to Come Home to the Miracle That Is Your Life
Have you ever attended a teaching session or dharma talk, not knowing what to expect—and then found yourself so deeply supported, instructed, and illuminated that it changed you forever?
Those of us lucky enough to learn with Thich Nhat Hanh so often say: What a rare and exceptional teacher.
This soft-spoken Zen master radiates a sense of freedom and lovingkindness that is a dharma transmission in itself. Yet his clarity of intellect also stands out: Thay, as his students call him, has a way of bringing into sharp focus the most subtle revelations of Buddhism—interbeing, emptiness, samadhi, the seeds of store consciousness, and more—all in a way that just “clicks.”
And the practices that he offers are refreshing and unique: simple breathing-based “mantras” that allow us to actually experience many profound concepts immediately and directly, on a felt level.
Begin with Your Embodied Presence
One core insight from Thich Nhat Hanh resonates powerfully in this program:
When your body and mind work together as one, you are fully and naturally present in the moment.
In our hectic modern world, it’s so easy to get caught up racing from one to-do to the next, planning this or worrying about that. We can get completely consumed by thoughts and unconscious habits that numb us to the sheer wonder of being alive—and to the suffering we create for ourselves and those around us.
Like a scientist, the Buddha searched for and identified these sources of unhappiness—and then provided clear instructions for uprooting their causes—to help us return home to our bodies, and to the wonders of life found only in the here and now.
Learn the Life-Changing Practices of the Buddha with Thich Nhat Hanh
In 2014, Thay experienced a stroke and has not led retreats since that time. But two years earlier, Sounds True had the opportunity to fully record one of his final—and finest—programs, taught here in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
We then worked with his senior students to build a complete program based on these powerful teaching sessions. The result?
When You Join This Beloved Zen Master, You’ll Discover …
Thich Nhat Hanh personally instructs you in every step of the Buddha’s key teachings and practices to cease internal conflict, release anxieties and frustrations, and enter the doorways to freedom and joy that are always readily available.

Heal Your Emotional Wounds Through Self-Kindness and Awareness
This session helps us to shine a light on our emotions and mental formations, so that we can guide and take care of them consciously. Session 5: Mindfulness in Our Relationships
In relationships we gain the opportunity to develop compassion in a meaningful way. Here, we uncover how we’re hurt by our loved ones and how our actions in turn can hurt them. We’ll learn to shine the light of mindfulness on our relationships, to develop the insight of interbeing—experiencing ourselves not as separate, but as connected.

- Expressing our hurt and pain, to heal and allow our love to grow
Illuminate the False Beliefs and Perceptions That Cause Suffering, to Enter the Kingdom of Wonder and Joy
Through the insight gained from mindfulness practice, we discover that many of our core beliefs may not be what they seem—birth and death, sameness and otherness, even the notion of the “self.” This session helps us to begin perceiving an “ultimate reality” that lies hidden beyond our false notions, and to liberate us from the suffering that those ideas create.
- Relative and ultimate truth
- “The Life of a Flame”—a teaching on “No Coming, No Going”
- The Diamond Sutra, on getting out of discrimination, fear, and shame
Tend the Garden of Your Heart and Mind to Germinate Its Many Blessings
Earlier, we learned that we have seeds lying within our store consciousness. When watered, they rise up to the level of consciousness. One of the most powerful seeds of store consciousness is compassion. Through heart-centered listening and loving speech, we germinate and grow it. Here, we learn ways to do this.
- The Five Mindfulness Trainings for transforming intolerance, anger, fear, and despair
- Bringing about peace in the world
- The practice of deep listening
Nourish Your Mind and Body … and Continue Your Transformation for a Lifetime
This session first explores The Four Nutriments: how our consumption of physical and mental “food”—what we eat, read, watch, and listen to—strongly influences us. Then we close by taking a deeper look at The Three Doors of Liberation: specific objects of concentration that can ultimately free us from suffering.
- The Four Nutriments
- The Three Doors of Liberation—emptiness, signlessness, and aimlessness
- Closing teachings and practices
