  • Recognize the level of palliative care required for a patient and when to consult a specialist

  • Recommend palliative care patient resources for primary care and other non-palliative specialist physicians

Dr. Richard Guthrie, DO received his Doctor of Osteopathy from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine attending on an Air Force Health Professions scholarship. After completing a rotating osteopathic internship at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, Dr. Guthrie served his active duty commitment as a Flight Surgeon at Luke Air Force Base logging over 200 flying hours in F-16, F-15, and F-4 fighter aircraft, as well as many other military platforms. He completed an Internal Medicine residency Banner Good Samaritan Hospital/Phoenix VA Medical Center. Dr. Guthrie was in the inaugural Fellowship class for Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Banner University Medical Center/Phoenix VA Medical Center from 2015 – 2016 and upon graduating became the Medical Director of Palliative Care at Banner Boswell Medical Center, where he also currently serves as Chair of the Bioethics Committee. Dr. Guthrie is a member of the clinical faculty at the University of Arizona, College of Medicine – Phoenix, and has served on the clinical faculty of Midwestern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. His professional passion is educating students, residents, fellows, and his primary care and other specialist colleagues about the fields of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
