Description

Dr. Early’s presentation will review the 2020 ADA Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes, including diagnostic criteria, and establishment of patient-centered body weight and glycemic goals. Participants will also learn about implicit bias and how biases impact patient care.

Kathaleen Briggs Early, PhD, RDN, CDCES, is an associate professor of nutrition at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences (PNWU) in the department of biomedical sciences. She is responsible for teaching medical students content related to obesity, diabetes, nutrition, and chronic disease prevention and management. She earned her doctorate in nutrition from Washington State University in 2007. She worked as a clinical dietitian and certified diabetes educator for a decade prior to joining PNWU in 2007 as one of the founding faculty members. Dr. Early has published qualitative and quantitative research in areas related to pediatric obesity, quality of life, rural provider views of diabetes technologies, experiences of families with type 1 diabetes, goal setting among adults with type 2 diabetes, and nutrition education in medical school. She is particularly interested in reducing health disparities among underserved, rural, and Latino communities. She normally sees patients weekly at the Yakima Union Gospel Mission Medical Clinic, where she provides diabetes care and education, and medical nutrition therapy for this underserved population. Dr. Early is also a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals including Diabetes Care, Diabetes Spectrum, and Patient Education and Counseling, and was recently appointed as an Associate Editor for the journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health. She thoroughly values her professional work teaching, and conducting community-based research, and in her free time she enjoys a daily Iyengar yoga practice, walking, and spending time with her family and pets.
